ICELAND • MARCH 2-9, 2026
Exploring Iceland in the winter is the ultimate adventure. The terrain is extreme, the weather is volatile, and the location is miles apart from the tropical islands that Seasick traditionally visits. Iceland is not for the faint-hearted. If done improperly, touring the land of “fire and ice” is uncomfortable. The key: balance luxury and convenience while also maintaining a level of authenticity. Seasick’s custom package is designed to do exactly that, showcase the best of Iceland without suffering and misery. Spacious Mercedes Benz vehicles with built-in WiFi, a new 4-star hotel, plus an itinerary packed with awe-inspiring activities are just the tip of the iceberg (get it?). Imagine an Icelandic safari. Actually, an ice safari, where the main attractions are frozen waterfalls, ice caves, geysers, and glaciers. Seven nights, four different hotels, and nonstop action. Days are spent roaming the Golden Circle, discovering the South Coast, and exploring Iceland’s capital, Reykjavík. Nights are spent gazing upon the sky searching for the Aurora Borealis aka Northern Lights.
So why March? Simple, the Spring Equinox is in March. This means enough hours of sunlight to enjoy day tours, but also enough hours of darkness to witness the Northern Lights. One month earlier and there isn’t sufficient sunlight to enjoy multiple day tours. One month later and there is very little “night”, hence the Northern Lights can’t be observed. March allows guests to have the best of both worlds.
And what about diving and snorkeling in Iceland? Included, of course.
Some call it crazy. Others call it time well spent.
ICELAND
Located in the North Atlantic Ocean near the Arctic Circle, Iceland is a bridge between continents. It is the westernmost country in Europe, midway between North America and mainland Europe. It takes approximately five hours to fly from New York to the country’s capital, Reykjavík (pronounced rake-ya-vik.) Iceland is a country of extreme geological contrasts. Widely known as “The Land of Fire and Ice,” Iceland is home to some of the largest glaciers in Europe and some of the world’s most active volcanoes. Iceland is also the land of light and darkness. Long summer days with near 24-hours of sunshine are offset by short winter days with only a few hours of daylight. Icelandic culture has been shaped by its isolation and the intense forces of nature. These conditions have created a resilient people, where family ties are close, the sense of tradition is strong, and the bond with nature is tight.
Country: Iceland • Continent: Europe • Capital: Reykjavík • Area: 39,682 sq mi • Highest Elevation: 6,920' (Mt. Hvannadalshnukur) • Volcanic Mountains: ≈ 130 • Waterfalls: 10,000+ • Population: 393,600 (2023) • Time: UTC+0 • Primary Religion: Christianity • Language: Icelandic, English • Currency: Króna ($1 = 136.00 ISK) • Industries: Tourism, Fishing, Aluminum • Electricity: 230V • Driving Side: Right
WEATHER AND CLIMATE
Thanks to the Gulf Stream, Iceland enjoys a cool, temperate maritime climate; cool in summer and fairly mild in winter (based on an individual’s definition of ‘mild’). The island’s weather is very unpredictable, and travelers should be prepared for anything. Due to its geographical location, sun and rain at the same time can be quite common. Iceland’s coldest months are November to January. September through April are the best months to witness the Northern Lights because the nights have sufficient darkness.
Crazy fact: Sunrise on March 1st in Iceland is at 8:36am and sunset is at 6:46pm; that's 10 hours and 10 minutes of daylight. By March 31st the length of day increases to 13 hours and 25 minutes (6:50am and 8:15pm respectively), that's a gain of 3 hours and 15 minutes of daylight in one month! Iceland is wild!
March Averages - High Temp: 40°F • Low Temp: 29°F • Sea Water Temp: Good luck • Daylight Hours: Varies by date • Sunshine Hours: 3.5 • Rainy Days: 14 • Monthly Precipitation: 3.3 in (mostly rain)
HOTEL REYKJAVÍK SAGA
Hotel Reykjavík Saga is an elegant 4-star hotel that opened in July 2022. Ideally situated at the very heart of the Reykjavík city center, the hotel is a stone's throw away from picturesque Lake Tjörnin (and the aggressive swans that live there), the cathedral, art museum, numerous shops and an array of restaurants. The hotel is on Lækjargata, a historic street in the center of Reykjavík, and has been designed with full respect to the surrounding buildings in a modern style that reflects Icelandic tradition. Location and environment have been fully considered throughout the design process. Within the hotel, guests will find the Fröken Reykjavík Kitchen & Bar, a gym, a steam bath, and a sauna.
Here is a little insider secret, most hotels in the downtown area can’t allow direct access for vans, shuttles, or other large vehicles because the roads are so narrow. Guests are forced to walk (sometimes with luggage) several blocks to/from the nearest drop point aka bus stop. However, Hotel Reykjavík Saga has access for coaches and other large vehicles directly across the street for drop off and pick up. Sweet!

NORTHERN LIGHTS
French philosopher Pierre Gassendi named the phenomenon Aurora Borealis in 1621 after Aurora, the Roman goddess of dawn, and Boreas, the purple-winged Greek god of the north wind. From September to April, Iceland is one of the best places in the world to experience the Northern Lights.
This spectacular natural light display in the sky, in the high-latitude regions, is caused by the collision of electrically charged particles with gaseous particles in the atmosphere 50 miles above. This collision releases energy, causing peculiar luminous green streaks across the skies. There are no guarantees that guests will see the Northern Lights, but sightings are immediately improved outside populated areas, especially away from the light-pollution of Reykjavík.
ICE CAVES
Ice caves are natural phenomena that are formed in glaciers during winter. Most often they are formed by water running through or under the glacier and new caves are formed every year. Guests enter the glacier, through a magical ‘gateway’ of blue/black ice-walls. The enormous mass of ice has been slowly crawling down from the volcano-mountain, creating impressive natural cavities. The twin elements of ice and infernal fire have combined to create a wonder of nature. Witness stripe upon stripe of differently colored ice forming stunning layers in the glacial ice.
SNOWMOBILES
Not just any snowmobiling. Glacier snowmobiling! Eleven percent of Iceland is made of glaciers (massive pieces of slow-moving ice). Truth is, riding a snowmobile on top of the biggest glaciers in Europe is definitely a rush. Speeding along on a remote section of snow-covered ice, 3,000' above sea level, surrounded only by mountains (plus a GPS unit attached in case anyone goes missing), and following some random tour leader that is likely an adrenaline junkie and loves pushing the limits (disclaimer: Seasick always prioritizes safety). In fact, just getting to the snowmobile start point is exhilarating as it requires multiple forms of transportation and vehicles (think Nordic monster trucks with 50" studded tires). Adventure seekers will definitely enjoy the ride as this isn’t some carnival cruise ship side tour!
Sounds a little crazy, doesn’t it?
SKY LAGOON
Located in Kársnes Harbour, Kópavogur, just minutes from Reykjavik’s vibrant city center and iconic urban landmarks, Sky Lagoon showcases expansive ocean vistas punctuated by awe-inspiring sunsets, Northern Lights and dark sky views (someone needs to chill out on the adjectives). The lagoon’s design is influenced by Icelandic culture, creating a distinctive guest experience modeled after local turf houses. Sky Lagoon’s multi-sensory oasis features an un-obstructed 230' infinity-edge in addition to cold pool and sauna experiences. Additional amenities include an in-lagoon bar, dining experience and retail offerings. How warm is the Sky Lagoon water? Try 100°F - 104°F year ‘round.
The Sky Lagoon Pure Pass Package includes: entrance fee, complete Seven-Step Ritual, public changing facilities, and towels. Seven-Step Ritual (in order): warm geothermal lagoon, glacier-fresh pool, multi-sensory sauna, cold fog-mist, signature cleansing scrub, hydrating steam room, good ol' standard shower.
DIVE OR SNORKEL SILFRA FISSURE
National Geographic has Iceland’s Silfra Fissure listed in their Top 100 Dives of a Lifetime. The dive and snorkeling site has become widely known in the last few years. Divers agree that this is one of the best freshwater dive sites in the world. Glacier water from Langjökull glacier that has been filtered for 50 years through the lava field to the fissure is so clear that the visibility is about 300’ (serious). The water in Silfra is a constant 35°-39°F throughout the year (cold enough to numb hands and lips).
Seasick’s package includes snorkeling* or diving** for all guests. Both activities will be available at the same time and location.
* Snorkeling: although there is no upper age limit, previous experience, or certification requirements, elderly people in bad physical shape are advised against joining the activity. Snorkel gear included: mask, snorkel, fins, drysuit (with attached boots), drysuit undergarment, gloves, and hood.
** Diving: previous dry suit diving experience is required. The dive guide will ask to see a dry suit certification card, or a logbook showing a minimum of 10 previous dry suit dives (signed by a dive professional). In addition, divers need to have dived in a dry suit within the last 2 years to ensure that skills are up to date. SCUBA gear included: mask, snorkel, fins, drysuit (with attached boots), drysuit undergarment, gloves, hood, BCD, regulator, tanks, and weight.
OTHER STUFF
Seasick’s wishlist: Thingvellir National Park • Geysir Hot Springs • Gullfoss Waterfall • Seljalandsfoss Waterfall • Skógafoss Waterfall • Skaftafell • Vatnajökull National Park • Jökulsarlón Glacier Lagoon • Diamond Beach • Reynisfjara (Black Beach and Basalt Columns) • Eyjafjallajökull (Volcano and Glacier Views) • Hekla (Volcano Views) • Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon • Plus anything listed on the Sample Itinerary
Note: The sites above are just examples of potential attractions and are not guaranteed. All sites are subject to weather conditions and local seasonal knowledge. The final itinerary is at the absolute discretion of the driver and guides.
THE RIDES
A combination of four vehicle types will be employed during the trip. Traditional day tour buses (for airport transfers and navigating around Reykjavík on days 1, 2, and 8) plus spacious Mercedes Benz Sprinter vans (to explore the South Coast on days 3-7) are the primary vehicle types. Then there are the Super Jeeps (imagine mini monster trucks) which must be utilized to access some of the activities that have challenging terrain. Lastly, when Super Jeeps ain’t enough, Big Red (fictitious name) will handle the job (a custom German missile chassis converted into a Transformer-like people mover).
Sick? Damn right.
