EGYPT • JUNE 14-21, 2025
The place of legend and lore. The home of Cleopatra, King Tut, and Ramses. The country that boasts the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Sphinx, and the Nile. And the land where hieroglyphics adorn the walls representing history’s most dominant and influential societies. This—is—Egypt.
Seasick’s custom three-part package combines the country’s “can’t miss” sites with the less-traveled and secret attractions. Start in Alexandria, traverse over to Cairo, then conclude in Luxor. Cairo, already been there done that? Impossible. There is something fresh and truly special: the GEM. The Grand Egyptian Museum ain’t your grandpa’s museum. It is the world’s largest archeological exhibition. It is colossal. It is staggering (over 22 years and $1,000,000,000 to build). It is brand-new (opened in October 2024). This alone is worth the trip to Egypt. Still not convinced? Seasick will also explore the area of Saqqara, home to many of the newest archeological discoveries (mummies are literally being pulled from the earth on a routine basis). Acrophobia (fear of heights) and taphophobia (fear of being buried alive) will certainly be tested. How so? One day guests crawl underground inside one of the Great Pyramids, the next day they soar in hot air balloons over the Nile and the Valley of the Kings. It’s pretty rad. Equally important is the group’s private Egyptologist. Not just any Egyptologist. One of the country’s very best who is extremely knowledgeable, charismatic, funny, and is easy to understand (critical).
Now is the chance to fulfill that lifelong dream to discover the greatest civilization of all time.
EGYPT
Egypt is located in the northeastern corner of Africa. Its prime geographic location has provided an abundance of resources that have contributed to this civilization’s prosperity. Not only does it have the longest flowing river in the world, the Nile, it is also conveniently situated between Europe and Asia, the Mediterranean and Red Sea, and it is connected to Sub Saharan Africa through the Nile Valley. The country is at the center of the Arab world and controls the Suez Canal, which is the shortest sea link between the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean.
From around 3100 BC to 525 BC, Egypt was the richest, most powerful empire in the world. As one of the world’s greatest civilizations, Egypt is known to have developed paper from the papyrus plant, their own form of writing (hieroglyphics), and advanced the studies of literature, science, and the arts. The inventions of agriculture, urbanization, religion and central government were also attributed to this civilization. The Ancient Egyptian Empire began to weaken in about 700 BC, and was then dominated by the Greeks, the Romans, the Arabs, the Turks, the British, and other empires.
As its official name states, the Arab Republic of Egypt, Egypt considers itself an Arab nation. Today Egypt remains one of the world’s great tourist destinations and its economy depends on tourism. Some of their iconic monuments are the Giza Necropolis, the Great Sphinx, the ruins of Memphis, Thebes, Karnak, and the Valley of the Kings, all of which reflect the legacy of this area. The pyramids of Egypt are the sole remaining Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still in existence.

Egypt has a desert climate with warm sunshine all year round and very little precipitation. In June expect temperatures of hot - crazy hot with some humidity. Although the best time to travel is from September to April when temperatures are at their most pleasant, June has fewer tourists with less crowds (thank Seasick later).

ALEXANDRIA
Alexandria is the second largest city in Egypt (Cairo is first) and lies on the western edge of the Nile River delta. The city spans about 25 miles and was founded in 332 BC by some guy named Alexander, heard of him? For centuries this port town acted as a major trade center between Europe, Arabia and India. At its prime during the Hellenistic period, Alexandria was considered the largest and most influential city in the ancient world. Bigger and badder than Rome!
Any place that has a history of more than five thousand years is sure to have dozens of tourist attractions (ancient and modern alike). Alexandria is no exception. Today, mosques, churches, castles, museums, ancient markets, luxurious palaces and lush gardens are all open to the public. Pharaonic, Greek and Islamic antiquities define the city. A city best known for three different landmarks: the Lighthouse of Alexandria (Pharos), one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Great Library, the largest in the ancient world spanning 11 floors and housing many ancient scrolls, and lastly, the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, one of the Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages.

ALEXANDRIA HIGHLIGHTS
CATACOMBS OF KOM EL SHOQAFA: Originally constructed in the 2nd century AD consisting of three tiers of tombs and chambers cut into bedrock to a depth of 115' (the bottom level is flooded and inaccessible). Scientists theorize the catacombs were originally built as a family crypt, but over the 300 years that the tomb was in use, more chambers were carved out until it had developed into a hive that could accommodate more than 300 corpses (spooky). The triclinium was a banqueting hall where grieving relatives paid their last respects with a funeral feast (very spooky). Discovered accidentally in 1900 when a donkey disappeared through the ground (sounds like the intro to a joke), these catacombs make up the largest-known Roman burial site in Egypt and one of the last major construction efforts dedicated to the religion of ancient Egypt.
CITADEL OF QAITBAY: Built from 1477 AD to 1479 AD over the ruins of Alexandria’s Lighthouse, this Citadel is one of the most important forts on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. Named for Mamluk sultan al-Ashraf Abu al-Nasr Qaitbay, the citadel was made of limestone and spanned an area of approximately 190,000 sq ft.
ROYAL JEWELRY MUSEUM: The spectacle is not only the jewelry, but the museum itself. In 1919, Zaynab Fahmi built a palace in Alexandria which now serves as The Royal Jewelry Museum. The grandiose palace merges European and Islamic styles, while reflecting the fine taste of the royal family whose paintings, gilded ceilings, and mosaics decorate every room. The Egyptian royal family possessions include a diamond and emerald inlaid collar belonging to the founder of the dynasty, gold chessboard (checkmate), and golden binoculars encrusted with precious stones.
POMPEY’S PILLAR: Made of a piece of red granite, Pompey’s Pillar is 68' high and 9' wide at its base. The total height of the Pillar, including the base and the crown, is 89'. Pompey’s Pillar is one of the few ruins of the ancient Roman complex known as Serapeum. This temple was created for the worship of the god Serapis and was built during the rule of Ptolemy I at the end of the 3rd century BC.
ANCIENT ROMAN THEATER: Roman amphitheaters are “common.” The remains of at least 230 different theaters have been discovered around Europe and the Middle East. However, there is only one in Egypt: The Roman Amphitheater in Alexandria aka Kom el-Dikka. This amphitheater was used during the Roman, Byzantine and the early Islamic era and was not rediscovered until the mid-20th century.
CAIRO
Cairo has been a center of Arab-Islamic civilization for thousands of years and today is one of the world's most unique cities due to its historical position and variety of monuments. Serving as the capital of Egypt and one of Africa’s largest cities, the city is famous for its heritage and cultural diversity. Like many capitals, Cairo is home to many government buildings and headquarters, such as the presidential palace, Egypt’s Cabinet and ministries, the House of Representatives, and the Central Bank. However, it is the Pharaonic, Greek, Roman, Coptic, and Islamic antiquities that attract millions of visitors from around the globe. There is no other place on Earth that showcases so many “wonders of the world” and jaw-dropping historical attractions. In modern times, Cairo has expanded to be what is called “Greater Cairo,” a semi-official administrative entity including Giza province and some of its suburbs as well as Shubra El-Kheima of Qalyubia province. The area is one of the most massive metropolitan areas in Africa.
Located on the banks of the Nile River some 500 miles downstream from the Aswan High Dam in the northeast of the country, Cairo is the gateway to the Nile delta, where the lower Nile separates into the Rosetta and Damietta branches.

FOUR SEASONS HOTEL CAIRO AT NILE PLAZA
The Four Seasons brand is synonymous with ultra-luxury, impeccable service, and the finest resort amenities. Generally, the cost to stay at any of the company’s prestigious locations is a bit cost-prohibitive (for example, the average rate for a standard room at the Las Vegas Four Seasons is around $1,000 per night, whoa). Luckily, Seasick has connections. Introducing the Four Seasons Hotel Cairo at Nile Plaza. The waterfront landmark property is located on the Nile riverbanks. Cool. It is in one of the most elegant neighborhoods in Cairo. Very cool. And it recently received a complete remodel in 2023. Mega cool. Just a stone's throw away (get it?) lies the most sought-after antiquities: the Great Sphinx, the 12th-century citadel, and the GEM (look it up or read more below). Within walking distance guests can access the Tahrir Square, the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities, numerous embassies, and everyday Egyptian life. Need them souvenirs? Shop in the high-end boutiques at the First Mall or the city’s 1,000-year-old market aka ancient bazaar.

CAIRO HIGHLIGHTS
GIZA PYRAMID COMPLEX: Also called the Giza Necropolis, the site includes the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Pyramid of Khafre, and the Pyramid of Menkaure, along with their associated pyramid complexes and the Great Sphinx of Giza. The Great Pyramid and the Pyramid of Khafre are the largest pyramids built in ancient Egypt, and they have historically been emblems of ancient Egypt in the Western imagination. One of the Seven Wonders of the World, it is by far the oldest of the ancient Wonders and the only one still in existence.
GREAT SPHINX: The limestone statue of a reclining sphinx (a mythical creature with the body of a lion and the head of a human) is the oldest known monumental sculpture in Egypt. It is believed to have been built by ancient Egyptians of the Old Kingdom during the reign of the Pharaoh Khafre (c. 2558 BC to 2532 BC).
MUSEUM OF EGYPTIAN ANTIQUITIES: Known commonly as the Egyptian Museum or Museum of Cairo, it is home to an extensive collection of ancient Egyptian antiquities. It houses over 100,000 items, with a substantial amount on display.
ISLAMIC CAIRO: Part of central Cairo around the old walled city and around the Citadel of Cairo which is characterized by hundreds of mosques, tombs, madrasas, mansions, caravanserais, and fortifications dating from the Islamic era. In 1979, UNESCO proclaimed Historic Cairo a World Cultural Heritage site.
KHAN EL-KHALILI BAZAAR: Shops typically sell souvenirs, antiques and jewelry, but many traditional workshops continue to operate in the surrounding area and the adjoining goldsmiths' souq, for example, is still important for locals. In addition to shops, there are several coffeehouses, restaurants, and street food vendors distributed throughout the market. One of the oldest and most famous coffeehouses is Fishawi's, established in 1773.
GRAND EGYPTIAN MUSEUM (GEM)
On January 5, 2002, the Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak laid the foundation stone of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM). After more than 20 years and $1,000,000,000 invested in development and construction, the GEM is finally nearing completion. What’s the big deal? Well, this archaeological museum is located about a mile from the Giza pyramid complex. More impressive is that the museum will host over 100,000 artifacts from ancient Egyptian civilization, including the complete Tutankhamun collection, and many pieces that have never been displayed for the public (ooooh). With 872,000 sq ft of floor space, it is the world's largest archeological museum (Seasick has allocated a full day for the pyramids and adjacent museum to ensure nothing is missed). The museum is being built (still not 100% ready) as part of a new master plan for the Giza Plateau, known as "Giza 2030".
Update (12.1.24): Admission is currently limited to the Main Galleries, Grand Hall, Grand Staircase, commercial area, and exterior gardens. Access to the Tutankhamun galleries and Salar Boat Museum is restricted until the official opening.
SAQQARA
Located 20 miles southwest of Cairo (the Great Pyramid is still visible on clear days), Saqqara is one of the most important cemeteries of Memphis, which was itself one of the most important cities in ancient Egyptian history. Saqqara is the definition of an open-air museum and has all of ancient Egyptian history on display. From unearthed kings and noblemen to the Step Pyramid of Djoser (oldest complete stone building complex known in history), visitors can witness some of the coolest artifacts Egypt has to offer.
But surely it can’t be more impressive than the Pyramids of Giza and Great Sphinx, right? Possibly. Saqqara is today’s hotspot for new archaeological discoveries. It is the area receiving all the buzz, the hype, the news-worthy events. In 2018, for example, mummified scarab beetles as well as dozens of mummified cats were uncovered. Then in 2022 more than 250 sarcophagi (full size and containing vivid exterior colors) and 150 bronze statues were revealed. It is worth the visit.

EGYPTAIR
After the Pyramids of Giza, the Great Sphinx, the museums, and everything else that Cairo (and neighboring Saqqara) has to offer, the party continues! Next up, Luxor. No additional cost for the one-way 60-minute flight from Cairo (CAI) to Luxor (LXR). Window seat please!
LUXOR
No, not Vegas. This Luxor is bigger, better, just not brighter. Luxor was once the capital of ancient Egypt and a significant religious and political center. From 1550 BC to 1077 BC the city flourished during the New Kingdom period and was dedicated to the god Amun-Ra, making it a crucial site for religious ceremonies and royal rituals. Today the remains of the ancient temples are still intact while others are being restored. By preventing further deterioration from factors like weathering, climate change, and past damage, the restoration preserves Egypt’s historical and cultural significance. The restoration also allows a global audience of tourists to experience a history rich with meaning and culture (and generates billions in profit).
Of the many monuments and temples in Egypt to explore, Luxor includes some of the most important: the 3400-year-old Luxor Temple and the Karnak Temple Complex, the necropolises of the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens, and the massive stone statues known as the Colossi of Memnon.

LUXOR HIGHLIGHTS
LUXOR TEMPLE: Constructed approximately 1400 BC, the large temple complex is located on the east bank of the Nile River in the city today known as Luxor (ancient Thebes).
KARNAK TEMPLE: The second most visited Egyptian site after the Giza Pyramids, the area features a vast mix of temples, chapels, pylons, and other buildings. One famous aspect of Karnak is the Hypostyle Hall in the Precinct of Amun-Re, an area of roughly 50,000 sq. ft. with 134 massive columns arranged in 16 rows. 122 of these columns are 30' in height, and the other 12 are 70' tall with a diameter of over 9'.
VALLEY OF THE KINGS: Famous for the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun, the World Heritage Site, stands on the west bank of the Nile, opposite Thebes. For a period of nearly 500 years from the 16th to 11th century BC, rock-cut tombs were excavated for the pharaohs and powerful nobles of the New Kingdom.
HATSHEPSUT TEMPLE: Considered one of the "incomparable monuments of ancient Egypt", the mortuary temple is dedicated to Amun and Hatshepsut and is located beneath the cliffs at Deir el-Bahari on the west bank of the Nile.
HOT AIR BALLOON
Seasick included a truly unique opportunity: a sunrise sky ride 1500' above the legendary Valley of the Kings. Take off from the western bank of the Nile River, glide over ancient civilizations, and gaze in awe.
